ⓘ Wood Rot & Exterior Carpentry Quick Answers
Jacksonville homeowners often call for exterior painting and discover soft fascia, cracked trim, swollen siding, or rotted door frames during the prep process. Paint cannot correct damaged wood. When failing material is painted without repair, moisture-related issues, swelling, peeling, and repeat maintenance can return sooner.
That’s why every A New Leaf exterior project starts with a careful walk-around to identify damaged carpentry before the first coat goes on. Visible rot gets called out in your written estimate — with specific repairs, materials, and pricing — so there are no surprises later.
We don’t paint over rot.
We repair, prime, and seal damaged wood before any finish coat.

☀ Why Jacksonville Exteriors Demand More
Jacksonville’s humidity, rain, sprinkler overspray, UV exposure, and coastal salt air all take a toll on exterior trim, fascia, siding, and door frames. Once caulk joints fail or paint coatings crack, moisture can enter the wood and cause swelling, softness, peeling paint, and decay.
Painting over those surfaces only hides the problem. The right approach repairs the damaged material first — then primes, seals, and paints with a system built for Florida conditions.
Backed by 750+ verified 5-star reviews across Northeast Florida. We repair what’s damaged, prepare what gets painted, and complete a final walkthrough before we call the job done. Every project is covered by our Iron-Clad Guarantee.

The painters were super polite and the work was completely expertly. They used a high quality paint and were fast and efficient. We did the whole house with one color and they did a portion of the ceiling. The pricing was fair and they matched a competitor. Highly recommended!Posted on Google Nancy MannTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had 3 bathrooms skim coated and painted. Billy and Michael did a very professional job, walls, trim, doors look fabulous!Posted on Google Kim NTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We recently hired A New Leaf Painting to paint the interior of our home. It took about 4 days for Billy and Mike to complete the job (even the 20 foot walls - on a ladder!). I cannot say enough about how happy i am with their work! Billy and Mike arrived at 7:00am each morning to start working, they cleaned up after themselves , moved furniture for us, AND even fixed our front door that had been “dragging” without being asked! The communication that took place each day was also great! I love how our home looks and i will definitely refer the company to friends!! Thank you, A New Leaf!!Posted on Google Thom EhrhardtTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Could not be happier. Great crew, and kept me informed throughout. Weather was unpredictable the whole time, but they painted when it was dry, and protected areas when it wasn't. Detailed trim work is perfect, and their clean up was flawless. Outstanding. We interviewed three companies (a fourth never showed up). Price was competitive, but the thorough presentation, and explanation of the entire process, sold us on A New Deal Painting.Posted on Google Mary HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After having several rooms painted a couple of month ago, I decided to have A New Leaf Painting return to my home to paint the rest of the interior of my home. I’m very pleased with the results, again. I’m very particular about painting, I want perfect lines and no mess. They do excellent work! I had a total of 4 contractors give me bids and they were the only one who measured the room and had specifics in the contract. ( from painting crown molding to paint colors per room, etc..). If you want quality and a professional job- call A New Leaf Painting return.Posted on Google K ETrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thomas Drake, the owner came out in person and provided a free estimate to remove wallpaper and repaint my Moms master and guest bathrooms. He emailed me the quote the same day. He was very courteous and thorough. The quote was reasonable so we scheduled the work. His crew arrived on time and did a fantastic job removing the wallpaper and painting the walls. They completed the job in 2 days. The crew was experienced, courteous, friendly and hardworking. I highly recommend A New Leaf Painting and will use them again for any future paint work.

Our Process · Wood Rot & Exterior Carpentry
Paint is only as strong as the surface underneath it. Before primer or finish coats, A New Leaf Painting inspects the exterior for damaged wood, soft fascia, failing trim, swollen siding, rotted door jambs, soffit damage, open caulk joints, and surfaces that may not hold paint properly.
When damage is found, we call it out in your written estimate with line-item pricing whenever possible. Rotten or failing wood should not be painted over — it needs to be repaired or replaced, sealed, primed, caulked, and integrated into the new exterior paint system.
One estimate. One schedule. One crew. One finished exterior.
Step One
We walk the home before painting to identify visible wood rot, failing siding, soft fascia, damaged soffits, cracked trim, door frame damage, open caulk joints, and surfaces that may not hold paint properly.
Step Two
When repairs are needed, we document the damaged areas and include repair pricing in your written exterior painting estimate whenever possible. You know what is being repaired before work begins.
Step Three
Rotten, soft, swollen, or failing exterior materials are removed carefully so the surrounding surfaces can be prepared for repair, sealing, primer, and finish paint.
Step Four
Depending on the location and exposure, we may use paint-grade lumber, cellular PVC trim, James Hardie® fiber-cement siding, HardieTrim®, T1-11 siding replacement, or other exterior-rated materials suited for Florida’s humidity, rain, UV exposure, and coastal conditions.
Step Five
Repaired areas are sealed, primed, caulked, and blended into the full exterior painting system so the finished home looks clean, uniform, and properly prepared. Every project is backed by our Iron-Clad Guarantee and final walkthrough.

What We Repair · Jacksonville & Northeast Florida
Our 5-step process tells you how we work. This section tells you what we actually repair on Jacksonville homes — the specific exterior issues we identify, document, and fix before any coating goes on.
The core of what we do. Identifying, removing, and replacing damaged exterior wood before painting.
Damaged siding panels and boards replaced and integrated before the new paint system goes on.
Wherever it makes sense, we replace rot-prone wood with materials engineered for Florida’s climate.
ⓘ How Our Carpentry Repairs Work
A New Leaf Painting performs exterior carpentry repairs as part of full exterior painting projects — not as standalone repair-only or handyman work. Every repair is documented in your written estimate with line-item pricing, so you know what each fix costs before work begins.
Inspection Checklist
Before we quote an exterior paint job, our team walks the home looking for the carpentry issues that can compromise a new paint system. Each item identified is documented and addressed in your written estimate.
Common Questions
The questions Jacksonville homeowners ask most often about wood rot repair, exterior carpentry, and what we do (and don’t do).
Yes. A New Leaf Painting repairs visible wood rot, siding damage, fascia issues, soffit problems, and other paint-related exterior carpentry as part of full exterior painting projects. Damaged wood is replaced, sealed, and primed before any finish coat is applied.
No. Rotten or soft wood should be repaired or replaced before painting. Painting over wood rot can temporarily hide the damage, but the paint usually fails early and the underlying decay continues. Repairing the damaged material first is what makes the new paint system last.
Fascia boards, soffits, exterior trim, door and window frames, garage trim, porch trim, and any areas exposed to rain, sprinkler overspray, or trapped moisture. Jacksonville’s humidity, UV exposure, and coastal air all accelerate exterior wood damage over time.
Where appropriate, yes. We use cellular PVC trim, James Hardie® fiber-cement siding and HardieTrim® boards, exterior-rated fasteners, and properly primed paint-grade lumber. The right material depends on the location and conditions — we’ll explain our recommendation in your estimate.
No. Our carpentry repairs are performed as part of full exterior painting projects. This focused scope is what allows one crew, one timeline, and one company to be accountable for the repair, prep, primer, and paint together — with line-item pricing for each repair.
No. We do not perform WDO repairs, termite treatment, or structural framing repairs. If we identify damage during your estimate that’s outside our scope, we’ll let you know so you can address it with the appropriate specialist before painting begins.
Backed by 750+ Verified 5-Star Reviews
