What it isn’t is automatically harmless. A fine crack on a sheltered elevation behaves differently than the same crack on a wall taking wind-driven rain. Depth, exposure, and whether it keeps reappearing all matter more than width alone.

Larger and Open Cracks

Wider cracking deserves real investigation before anything goes over it. Possible explanations include repeated movement at that location, a previous repair that failed, separation at a transition between assemblies, moisture working at the substrate, or movement in the wall itself.

The honest position: a painting contractor can tell you what a crack looks like, whether it’s been repaired before, and whether there are moisture clues around it. Determining whether a wall is moving structurally is a different profession.

Openings interrupt a wall’s continuity, so movement concentrates at their corners. Diagonal cracking running away from a window or door corner is common enough that we see it on a large share of older stucco homes.

What we look at when we find one: whether the perimeter sealant has failed, whether the area has been patched before, whether there’s staining or bubbling paint nearby suggesting water has been getting in, and whether the crack follows the same line as a previous repair.

A recurring crack near an opening deserves closer evaluation before it’s simply patched and painted again. Not because it’s necessarily serious — often it isn’t — but because repeating a repair that already failed once tends to produce the same result.

Control Joints and Expansion Joints

These are supposed to move. They’re built into the wall specifically to give thermal and structural movement somewhere to go, and treating them as damage causes problems.

What that means practically: a control or expansion joint should not be filled with rigid patching material. Doing so removes the wall’s designed relief point and tends to push cracking somewhere less convenient. Painting over it tends to produce adhesion failure fairly quickly, because the coating is bonding to a loose mineral layer rather than the substrate. Applying elastomeric to every stucco home as a default can add cost without adding meaningful performance when the wall doesn’t call for it.

Plenty of Fleming Island stucco homes are well served by a quality masonry-compatible acrylic system — specifically, walls with limited and stable cracking, a sound and compatible existing coating, repairs properly completed, and thorough preparation.

This isn’t a repair tutorial — the right material and method depend on the specific crack, and getting that wrong is worse than doing nothing. But the decision sequence a professional should be working through is worth understanding:

  1. Identify what type of crack is present and where it sits
  2. Determine whether it appears stable or recurring
  3. Inspect the coating surrounding it for adhesion and condition
  4. Look for moisture clues, and trace the source if any are present

They call for different materials. A single tube of the same product applied to all five is the kind of shortcut that shows up two winters later.

What About Very Small Hairline Cracks?

Some fine hairline cracking can be managed within a properly selected preparation and coating system, particularly where it’s stable, shallow, and in a sheltered location.

Others need individual attention depending on depth, whether they’re genuinely open, whether they keep reappearing, where they are on the wall, what coating is already there, and how exposed that elevation is.

Two things we’d avoid telling you: that hairlines never matter, and that every hairline needs aggressive routing or grinding. Both are shortcuts that skip the actual assessment.

When a Crack Should Be Evaluated Beyond the Painter

We’re painting contractors. There are conditions where the honest answer is that someone else should look first.

Conditions that may justify evaluation by an appropriate building professional before painting proceeds:

  • Visible displacement, where one side of a crack sits proud of the other
  • A crack that is measurably changing or widening over a short period
  • Extensive cracking patterns across multiple elevations
  • Cracking accompanied by other signs of building movement — doors or windows binding, floors out of level, separation at interior corners
  • Persistent water intrusion that can’t be explained by the coating, the sealant, or an obvious exterior source

None of that is a diagnosis, and none of it means a home has a structural problem. It means the question exceeds what a coating decision can answer, and painting over it first is the wrong order.

The 1990s and 2000s buildout across Fleming Island — through Eagle Harbor, Fleming Island Plantation, Pace Island, and the established Hibernia-area neighborhoods — means a large share of stucco homes here are decades into their maintenance life.
