Wallpaper is nice, until it starts to fail. Wallpaper can pucker and peel with time, due to moisture and a host of other factors. If you have some damaged wallpaper in your home, you may be ready to paint your house instead. But first you’ll have to strip the wallpaper, and that’s easier said than done. A New Leaf Painting can do all or part of this job for you, getting rid of your old wallpaper and/or painting interior walls just like you want them. If you are interested in doing the wallpaper stripping yourself, here are the steps involved.
- Buy some drop cloths and have them placed beneath the area where you are working. Remove outlet covers and any other thing that will get in your way.
- Score the wallpaper. This is a process where you make small holes in the wallpaper surface. The wallpaper solution that detaches the paper from the wall soaks in through these holes.
- Make a solution out of fabric softener and water. You can buy stripping products, but this works really well and is a lot cheaper.
- Soak the walls, spraying the fabric softener/water solution on small patches of wall. Only soak as much wall at a time as you can strip in 10 minutes. Let the paper soak before you begin scraping.
- Pull pieces of wallpaper that are already peeling away, and use a putty knife to scrape pieces that are still adhered. Repeat this process until you’ve removed everything.
- Clean the walls with dish detergent and hot water. When every paper remnant is cleared away, then dry the wall with a towel. You can now prepare to paint.
