Sometimes, your room needs a wall paint color that will make a bold statement. It’s fun to pick out paint colors like that. Unfortunately, most rooms call for paint colors that are more safe and practical. And too often, that color ends up being a very traditional shade of beige. If you’re a big fan of beige, don’t be offended. We don’t mind beige at all. But if you’re looking for a shade that’s safe and neutral, we just want to make sure you know all of your options.

Darker earth tones - especially highly saturated shades of brown - are great for balancing out rooms that don’t have a lot of natural light. They contrast very naturally with any lighter decorative elements (or trim) you have in the room, so keep this in mind when picking out accessories. Because of this dark brown wall paint tends to feel a little more “fun” than beige, but because it also tends to have a timeless feel to it, we definitely put it into the safe, neutral category. If you’re looking at Benjamin Moore paint colors, check out their “Falcon Brown” to see what we’re talking about.

When it comes to practical neutrals from the family of Behr paint colors, we love “Observatory.” It’s a dark blue that’s anything but boring. As with Falcon Brown, Observatory is a safe neutral that’s suitable for almost any room. But its high level of saturation gives it energy and contrast that set it apart from most traditional neutrals. It’s a dark shade of blue, but the right accessories will bring plenty of tasteful contrast to any room you choose to use it in.

If you’re not sold on any of these non-beige neutrals, don’t worry. Check out a non-traditional beige like “Nomadic Desert,” from Sherwin-Williams. Like any beige, it’s safe and practical. But it feels much more adventurous than the less-exciting beige hues out there. We attribute that to the fact that it’s more saturated than its boring cousins.
