Why Sherwin Williams' Emerald Rain Refresh Should Be Your Next Purchase for Home Improvement | A New Leaf Painting

The Difference Between Duration and Emerald

Duration vs Emerald Paint: Which Sherwin-Williams Paint Is Better?

Updated August 30, 2026

The short answer: both are premium Sherwin-Williams products, and neither one wins every time. Emerald generally gives you the more refined finish and, on exteriors, the better resistance to dirt pickup. Duration gives you a heavier film build, more sheen options outside, and often better value. Which one belongs on your house depends on whether the job is inside or out, what shape the surface is in, how much sun and weather that wall takes, and how much performance you actually need.

We have been painting homes in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida since 2001, and we specify both products regularly on exterior painting projects and interior painting projects. The right choice depends less on which label costs more and more on the surface, exposure, preparation, and finish you expect. Here is how we decide.

Emerald and Duration are both premium lines. The right one depends on the surface and the exposure, not on which sits higher on the shelf.

Quick Answer: Emerald vs Duration

What you care about Emerald Duration Who it suits
Finish quality Smooth, uniform, the more refined of the two Very good, slightly heavier-bodied look Emerald where the finish is on display
Film build Standard premium build PermaLast technology gives a thicker coat Duration on textured or previously patched surfaces
Dirt pickup (exterior) Sherwin-Williams claims resistance to dirt pickup No dirt-pickup claim on the exterior product Emerald on light colors and shaded elevations
Mildew resistance Mildew-resistant coating Mildew-resistant coating Even — both carry the claim
Exterior sheens Flat, Satin, Gloss Flat, Low Lustre, Satin, Gloss Duration if you want Low Lustre specifically
Moisture-prone interiors Emerald Interior Duration Home carries Moisture Resistant Technology Duration Home in baths and laundry rooms
Warranty (exterior) Lifetime Limited Warranty Lifetime Limited Warranty Even
Price Higher Lower Depends on how much of the difference you will actually use

Prices move with finish, product version, store, promotions and contractor pricing, so any specific dollar figure you read online is out of date by the time you read it. Ask for current pricing on the exact sheen and product your project calls for.

What Is Sherwin-Williams Emerald?

Emerald is Sherwin-Williams’ premium line, and it is a family rather than a single product. There is an Emerald Exterior, an Emerald Interior, Emerald Designer Edition for interiors, Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel for trim and doors, and a separate exterior product called Emerald Rain Refresh. They are not interchangeable, and a recommendation for one is not a recommendation for all of them.

On exteriors, Sherwin-Williams describes Emerald as offering “resistance to blistering, peeling, fading and dirt pickup, as well as a mildew-resistant coating.” That dirt-pickup claim matters more here than it sounds. On a light-colored house on a shaded elevation in Jacksonville, dirt and surface mildew are usually what makes a wall look tired long before the coating actually fails.

Emerald Rain Refresh is a different product. It is built around what Sherwin-Williams calls Self-Cleaning Technology, and the company’s own description is that it is “formulated so dirt washes away upon contact with rain or water.” It is worth considering on homes where washing the exterior is awkward — tall elevations, tight lot lines, heavy tree cover — but it is a separate purchase decision, not an upgrade that comes with regular Emerald.

What Is Sherwin-Williams Duration?

Duration Exterior is Sherwin-Williams’ long-running premium exterior coating, and it is still one of their best sellers. Its defining feature is PermaLast technology, which Sherwin-Williams describes as delivering “more durability and a thicker coat than ordinary latex paint.”

That heavier film build is a real advantage on the right surface. On stucco with fine texture, on siding that has been patched, on anything where you want the coating to carry across small surface irregularities, more material on the wall is genuinely useful.

The interior product is called Duration Home, and it is a different formulation with a different feature set — most notably Moisture Resistant Technology, which is an interior claim only. If you have read that exterior Duration is the better choice in humid conditions because of moisture-resistant technology, that is a mix-up between two different products. It is an interior feature.

The Real Differences Homeowners Should Care About

Finish quality

Emerald lays down smoother and more uniform. On a front elevation, on interior walls that catch side light, or anywhere a homeowner is going to stand close and look at the wall, that difference is visible. On a back fence line or a garage side wall, it is not.

Durability

Both are premium coatings and both carry a Lifetime Limited Warranty on the exterior versions. We are not going to tell you a specific number of years, because the honest answer is that service life depends on exposure, surface condition, preparation, the number of coats applied and how the house is maintained. Two identical products on two identical houses will not last the same length of time if one elevation faces due west and the other is shaded.

Washability and maintenance

Inside, both clean well. The meaningful difference is Duration Home’s Moisture Resistant Technology, which is aimed at rooms that take steam and splashing. Outside, the meaningful difference runs the other way — Emerald’s dirt-pickup resistance is a maintenance advantage on a house you would rather not be washing every year.

Exterior performance in Northeast Florida

Our conditions are hard on coatings in a specific way. Intense UV on south and west elevations, months of high humidity, wind-driven afternoon storms, and salt in the air closer to the beaches. North-facing and tree-shaded walls stay damp longer and grow surface mildew faster. Both products carry a mildew-resistant coating claim, and on both the claim is about resisting growth on the paint film — not about eliminating mildew from the wall or fixing whatever is keeping that wall wet.

Application

Duration’s heavier film build means it goes on with more material per coat, which is an advantage on texture and a consideration for cut lines and detail work. Emerald tends to level out more smoothly. A crew that uses both regularly will pick based on the substrate in front of them, not on habit.

Price

Emerald costs more. How much more depends on sheen, product version, store and the day. What matters is not the gap on the can, but whether the project will actually use what you paid for.

Value

This is the part most comparisons skip. The most expensive paint is not automatically the best value. If a wall is properly prepared, correctly primed where it needs to be, and getting the right number of coats, Duration will perform well for a very long time. Spending the Emerald premium on a project where nobody will ever notice the finish difference is not a better outcome — it is just a bigger invoice.

Duration vs Emerald for Exterior Painting

Most of the exteriors we paint in Jacksonville fall into a few categories, and the product choice tends to follow the substrate.

Stucco. This is where the primer decision matters more than the topcoat decision. Sherwin-Williams’ own data sheets state that surfaces with a pH above 9 must be primed with a high-pH-resistant coating such as Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer before either product goes on. Fresh or repaired stucco frequently falls in that range. If your wall needs stucco repair first, the repairs and the priming system drive the schedule, and the choice between Emerald and Duration is the last decision, not the first.

Fiber cement and James Hardie siding. Both products perform well. Factory-primed board in sound condition is a straightforward repaint, and this is a common place where Duration is more than enough.

Wood trim, fascia and soffit. Check the data sheet before assuming self-priming covers it. Composition board and hardboard call for an exterior oil-based wood primer, and tannin-rich woods like cedar and redwood may need spot priming where staining persists.

Sun-exposed elevations. South and west walls take the most UV. Both products carry fade-resistance positioning; neither is immune, and darker colors on those walls will always work harder.

Shaded walls and coastal exposure. This is where we lean toward Emerald more often. Walls that stay damp and walls that collect salt and airborne grit are exactly where dirt-pickup resistance earns its money.

The honest summary: for a high-visibility exterior where appearance, dirt resistance and long-term finish quality matter, Emerald may be worth the upgrade. For a properly prepared home in sound condition, Duration is still a very strong exterior choice. Preparation and the correct primer matter as much as which premium topcoat goes over them. If you are weighing up a full repaint, our exterior painting service page explains how we scope that work, and the exterior painting resource center covers the surrounding decisions.

Duration vs Emerald for Interior Painting

Inside, the comparison is Emerald Interior against Duration Home, and the two are closer than most articles suggest. Published volume-solids figures for comparable sheens sit within a point of each other, inside both products’ stated tolerances. Anyone telling you Emerald contains meaningfully more solids than Duration Home on the interior side is reading more into the data sheet than it says.

Where Emerald tends to be worth it: living rooms and entryways where the finish is on display, deep and saturated colors, walls that catch raking light, and homes where the owner is particular about how a wall looks up close.

Where Duration Home makes sense: bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens, where Moisture Resistant Technology is aimed directly at the problem. Also hallways, bedrooms and standard residential spaces where you want strong performance without paying for a finish refinement nobody is going to inspect.

Households with kids and pets: both clean well. Sheen choice will affect your day-to-day experience more than the choice between these two products. A satin in a hallway will outperform a flat in the same hallway regardless of which line it comes from. Our interior painting service page and the interior painting resource center go deeper on sheen selection.

Which One Do We Use?

At A New Leaf Painting Contractors we do not pick paint by brand hierarchy. We look at the surface, the exposure, what is already on the wall, what preparation it needs, the color and sheen you have chosen, and what you expect the finish to look like in year five.

In practice that means we specify Emerald on plenty of projects and Duration on plenty of others. On masonry and stucco systems we are often more interested in whether the job calls for Loxon XP or a Loxon primer underneath than in which premium topcoat goes on top. We use Latitude where it suits the conditions, and Benjamin Moore products where they are the better fit. Any contractor who recommends the same product on every house is not really looking at the house.

When Emerald Is Worth the Extra Cost

  • Front elevations and interior spaces where the finish is genuinely on display
  • Light exterior colors on shaded or tree-covered walls, where dirt pickup shows first
  • Coastal exposure, where airborne salt and grit accumulate
  • Homes that are difficult or expensive to wash down
  • Deep or saturated interior colors, where levelling and uniformity matter most
  • Homeowners who would rather pay once for the better finish than think about it again

When Duration Is Probably Enough

  • Sound, previously painted substrate in good condition
  • Textured surfaces where a heavier film build is an advantage
  • Standard residential interiors — bedrooms, hallways, secondary spaces
  • Bathrooms and laundry rooms, where Duration Home’s moisture positioning is the more relevant feature
  • Budget-conscious projects where you want premium performance without the top-tier price
  • Anywhere the finish refinement will not be noticed or valued

Preparation Matters More Than the Label

This is the part we would underline if we could only keep one section.

A premium paint applied over a poorly prepared surface can still fail early. Neither of these products is a rescue plan for a wall that was not ready. Washing, scraping, sanding, sound repairs, correct caulking at joints and transitions, and the right primer where the substrate requires one — that sequence determines more about how the job looks in five years than the choice between two premium coatings.

It is also worth knowing that “self-priming” is a heavily qualified claim, and Sherwin-Williams qualifies it themselves. Their data sheets call for a separate primer on high-pH surfaces, on masonry and block, on composition board, on tannin-rich woods, on bare wood inside, and when you are making a drastic color change or covering heavy staining. A contractor who tells you no primer is ever needed because the paint is self-priming has not read the data sheet.

And if the surface is failing — peeling, chalking heavily, hollow, or holding moisture from somewhere — that gets addressed first. A topcoat is not going to fix it.

Bottom Line: Emerald vs Duration

Choose Emerald when you want the more refined finish, when dirt pickup on the exterior is a real maintenance concern, or when the project justifies the higher-end system.

Choose Duration when you want excellent performance and better value, when a heavier film build suits the surface, or — on the interior — when Duration Home’s moisture positioning matches the room.

The better paint is the one matched correctly to the surface, the exposure and the expectation. On some homes that is Emerald. On plenty of others, Duration is already more than enough, and the money is better spent on preparation.
